1, Where it all started

So what to do with myself?   I know Ill build a cobra there cool........Thats pretty much how it started! Seriously - not a massive amount of thought just a mad idea and off we went.

This was also spurred on by comment from people like "Oh I wish I had built a car", "Oh I had a chance to build one but didn't and regret it now".....So sod that - never try and regret it or try and succeed  (possibly fail but I don't think like that!).

I looked around at comments on kit makes and types and in the end AK  http://www.aksportscars.co.uk had good reviews and were as local as you can get to the midlands so the decision was made.

A quick factory tour later and I placed my order.....

6 Months-ish Later - its off to pick it up, so I strapped the massive trailer onto the Disco and off we went to Peterborough.

I had decided to go for a large kit with most of the parts to build the rolling chassis - this costs more clearly but time was going to be short so I decided that cleaning dirty old parts was far less exciting than fitting shiny bits.

I had also decided that it was not going to be a traditional car but one that would be used and hopefully used a lot.....so it needs to be reliable.....and of course FAST/Scary!

So I plumbed for the LS3 engine - some people don't seem to like these as they are not traditional in any way, but a fuel injected modern engine is the way forward for I think.  This should allow me to have a reliable car and should go pretty well also!  I drove AKs Marmite demo car and this was pretty awesome so I was sold.  The thing is, if I even do a week in it to work, I will clear over 1000 miles so it needs to work and work well and every time!

Jesus this thing is long!

  1. Hi Paul,

Thank you for sharing such a great amount of detail about your build. The spec that you've chosen is pretty well exactly what I had in mind.

Just to ask a super-rude question .... are you able to give any idea about the sort of ball-park budget that you've pencilled in?

    No worries if not!

    Many thanks,
    Rob

  2. Hi Rob,

Well I reckon about 30k. This is what AK told me and seems about right - so far I have spent about 15-18ish I rekon and with paint (4k?) interior 2.5k and exhausts 2k and eco 2k left seems about right.

Had 20k to got at initially and then thought I would save as I go along but ended up doing the rolling chassis quite quickly so am now more heat by money than anything else. I suppose having a second child and renovating a house at the same time wasn't a good plan : ).
